An inspirational place

A former Swedish boarding house or the site of what used to be a convent? If the history of this elegant building in Rue Vaneau remains shrouded in mystery, something remains certain: the Hotel de Suède is a haven favoured by many writers when they stay in Paris.

Several publishers accommodate their foreign writers there, certain that they will be able to work undisturbed in a comfortable setting. The most Parisian of all Spanish novel writers, Enrique Vila-Matas, mentions the hotel in the opening pages of “Doctor Pasavento,” in which he also refers to the visits of his Portuguese counterpart António Lobo Antunes. The latter, faithful to the place, appreciates its charm and along with other writers, is keenly attached to Rue Vaneau.

André Gide, Julien Green or Antoine de Saint-Exupéry all have in common the numerous walks they enjoyed through this iconic Parisian street.

According to the legend, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels wrote their illustrious manifestoes there. Finally, American writer Jim Harrison, famous for his novel “Legends of the Fall” (among other bestsellers) is also very fond of Hotel de Suède for its exceptional view of the gardens and most of all, the birdsong.

In an interview given to a French newspaper a few years ago he referred to it as the only place in Paris where he did not feel oppressed. This is proof, if any more was needed, that the Hotel de Suède really is an exceptional place, a true patch of green nestled in the heart of Paris.

The Invalides are a famous monument located near the Hotel de Suède Paris.

In 1670, Louis XIV adopted plans by Liberal Bruant to build a hospital for invalid soldiers, condamned for theft and mendicity. This site was the second in importance after that of Versailles and began in 1671. The church opened for the soldiers in 1677. However, it was in 1706 that the completion of the royal church, famous for its golden dome, marked the end of the work.

The main facade of the building extends from either side of a huge semi-circular portico of the main entrance guarded by statues of Mars, warlord in ancient Roman era and Minerva, goddess of wisdom ensuring the defense of the hospital. These two statues are the work of William Couston and the famous equestrian statue of Louis XIV.

It is among the papers of his uncle, that he noticed the plans of the Dome, originally designed into a mausoleum for France’s kings in St Denis.

Two pavilions frame the facade decorated with a garden surrounded by walls built by Vauban, on which are aligned guns of the seventeenth and eighteenth century. The Hotel des Invalides is known for its dome covered during its restoration in 1989, of 550 000 gold leaves, laid by ten gilder masters. Today the Dome des Invalides houses the ashes of Napoleon, brought back in 1840.

The hospitality tradition continues with an advanced surgical hospital.
The Northwest wing houses the Army Museum and the Esplanade des Invalides designed by Robert de Cotte which extends until the Seine.

The most famous monument in paris is the Eiffel tower located a few minutes step from the hotel de Suède.

The Eiffel Tower was built by engineer Gustave Eiffel for the Universal Exhibition of 1889. Gustave Eiffel did not see just in this building, a small attraction for visitor but a useful tool for science, true example of modern science, it was the perfect manifestation of French engineer genius.

The book “The three hundred meters tower”, written by Eiffel and dedicated to his colleagues, was published in 1900 in two volumes. The first recounted the genesis of the project, work specifications, the cost of the construction, the commercial exploitation and the science’s experiments in various fields such as meteorology, physiology or physics, which could be carried out. The second volume is a summary of boards and photographs that illustrate the descriptions.

Located at the end of the Champ de Mars, just beside the Seine, this symbol of France and its capital is the third most visited site in the country.

From an original height of 300 meters, she was subsequently raised by numerous antennas to a peak of 325 meters, the Eiffel Tower remained the highest tower in the world for over 40 years. Used in the past for many scientific experiments, it now serves as a transmitter for radio and television programs.

The 39 bedrooms and suites of Hotel de Suède are divided between the main building and the adjoining wing, both offering very different atmospheres and decors. These well-lit bedrooms, decorated in beige and light shades, are elegantly and comfortably furnished and are an invitation to the utmost relaxation. Furniture is carefully chosen, a combination of unique and ancient pieces from bed heads to desks in a retro style, and a range of modern appliances (air conditioning, Internet connection, LCD TV screens). Whether with a view on the Matignon Gardens or the very quiet Rue Vaneau, they all offer a bathroom or a shower and are non-smoking rooms without exception.

The Hotel de Suède is a typically charming Parisian hotel, ideal for those seeking to remain undisturbed. Hotel de Suède is the only hotel in Paris that can offer a view on the Matignon Gardens and is the ultimate place for peaceful rest: well-lit, surrounded by greenery and ideally located near to all the city’s landmarks. A short distance from numerous Ministry buildings and Embassies, the Hotel lies in the secure environment of Rue Vaneau and from its largely residential and peaceful neighbourhood.
