Paris Summer : events to make the season unforgettable
July 14th commemorates the 1789 Storming of the Bastille, the event which gave rise to the freedom and democracy enjoyed in France today, an important national holiday. Each year sees a huge and stirring military parade take place along the Champs Elysees before the French President and a large and appreciative crowd. The day culminates in a spectacular fireworks display overlooked by the Eiffel Tower, which can be viewed from the Champs de Mars.
The Paris Plages event takes place from July 20th to August 18th. This is when some of the roads by the Seine are closed to traffic and a seaside ambience is created right here in the French capital, courtesy of palm trees, deckchairs and 3000 tons of sand brought in for the occasion. Live music, shows, sports, concerts, and plenty of entertainment for the children are on offer, so come and unwind by the river.
For film fans, the Open Air Cinema Festival runs from July 24th to August 25th. This free event takes place in the stylish and comfortable surroundings of the Parc de la Villette, where a huge cinema screen is set up to show movies each night. From popular films to beloved old classics, art house and foreign movies, there's something for all tastes. Be sure to bring a picnic and hire a deckchair.
