Bon Marche : the recommendation of the Hotel de Suede

In 1852, the Videau brothers joined forces with Aristide and Marguerite Boucicaut who undertook to transform the Au Bon Marché store. Offering a wide choice, small profit margins allowing for low prices clearly indicated on labels, a satisfied or your « money back guarantee », « merchandising of the products in a sales area », the couple had just invented the concept of the department store !

However, these two visionaries alarmed the Videau brothers, who sold them their share Bon Marche in 1863. By 1869, the store’s success was such that the Boucicauts extended it and soon Au Bon Marché stretched over 50000m² and employed more than 1700 people. The oldest French department store, renamed Le Bon Marché in 1989, has not stopped growing since.

Anima, Charlotte Dumas, an original exhibition a stone’s throw from the Hotel de Suède

Inaugurated in 1957, the Dutch cultural centre is one of the oldest in Paris. It stages throughout the year a number of cultural events including concerts, conferences, dance and theatre evenings as well as film screenings. Anima, Charlotte Dumas, the exhibition currently being staged there is one of the highlights of its programme!
It throws the spotlight on the work of the photographer, who shares with her models – wolves, horses, tigers and dogs – a rare intimacy. This special rapport results in astonishing portraits, from which she has drawn the series Retrieved and Anima. You can also discover Polaroid pictures taken by the artist as part of her preparatory work, and presented for the first time to the public for the occasion of the Month of Photography!

The Invalides, built under Louis XIV

In 1670, Louis XIV adopted plans by Liberal Bruant to build a hospital for invalid soldiers, condamned for theft and mendicity. This site was the second in importance after that of Versailles and began in 1671. The church opened for the soldiers in 1677. However, it was in 1706 that the completion of the royal church, famous for its golden dome, marked the end of the work.

The main facade of the building extends from either side of a huge semi-circular portico of the main entrance guarded by statues of Mars, warlord in ancient Roman era and Minerva, goddess of wisdom ensuring the defense of the hospital. These two statues are the work of William Couston and the famous equestrian statue of Louis XIV.

It is among the papers of his uncle, that he noticed the plans of the Dome, originally designed into a mausoleum for France’s kings in St Denis.

Two pavilions frame the facade decorated with a garden surrounded by walls built by Vauban, on which are aligned guns of the seventeenth and eighteenth century.The Hotel des Invalides is known for its dome covered during its restoration in 1989, of 550 000 gold leaves, laid by ten gilder masters. Today the Dome des Invalides houses the ashes of Napoleon, brought back in 1840.

The hospitality tradition continues with an advanced surgical hospital.
The Northwest wing houses the Army Museum and the Esplanade des Invalides designed by Robert de Cotte which extends until the Seine.
