Bon Marche : the recommendation of the Hotel de Suede
In 1852, the Videau brothers joined forces with Aristide and Marguerite Boucicaut who undertook to transform the Au Bon Marché store. Offering a wide choice, small profit margins allowing for low prices clearly indicated on labels, a satisfied or your « money back guarantee », « merchandising of the products in a sales area », the couple had just invented the concept of the department store !
However, these two visionaries alarmed the Videau brothers, who sold them their share Bon Marche in 1863. By 1869, the store’s success was such that the Boucicauts extended it and soon Au Bon Marché stretched over 50000m² and employed more than 1700 people. The oldest French department store, renamed Le Bon Marché in 1989, has not stopped growing since.
